Chapter 7
In The Crossfire?
We
arrived at the place at nine. The atmosphere was a mix between an outdoor party
and a pool party. There was no awkwardness, I talked with everybody. The press
conferences went down quickly, and the president of the team talked as well as
the deputy and the trainer. They all rated the year positively and hoped for
the better next season. The mentioned who they are keeping and who they are
saying good-bye to.
We
were well into the party when I spotted Stephan. As I stepped into the room, I
instantly felt him. He was wearing a black t-shirt, sunglasses and grey, tartan
shorts. He looks so good, I thought,
and I prayed to have the courage to talk to him. When I took a step towards
him, Zlatan grabbed my hand and dragged me away into a less visible corner of
the room.
“Why
did you bring me here?” I asked, surprised, and I tried not to lose Stephan out
of sight.
“Listen
to me because what I’m about to say is very important, Lili.” I heard his deep
voice and it was strange because he seemed nervous. I never noticed it before.
“Lili, I want to say something that maybe I shouldn’t, but I can’t keep it in
me anymore. Are you listening?” He raised his voice. I turned towards him,
meaning ‘yes’, and sighing, he continued. “When you were with Stephan I never
though of this, but as we know, you broke up and I thought maybe–” He was cut
off by my phone going off.
“Sorry,
I have to take this,” I said, and my heart almost jumped out when I saw
Stephan’s calling me. “Stephan’s calling, yay!” I said and leaving Stephan
there, I answered the call. “Talk.”
“Where
are you? I talked with Helena and she said you’re here too, but I don’t see
you.”
“I
was talking to Zlatan.”
“Really,
about what?”
“I
don’t think we should discuss this over the phone. Where are you?” I asked,
completely forgetting about Zlatan.
“I’m
at the bar.”
“I
see you, I’m coming.”
A
few minutes later we were already talking at a table about what happened.
“Then
what will it be?”
“What
should be? Can you forgive me?” He looked at me and his greyish blue eyes
glistened.
“Let’s
try,” I moved closer to him and kissed him. I felt heat run through my body. I
missed it and I didn’t know where I was when I opened my eyes. We were occupied
with each other all night and I didn’t even care they were taking pictures of
us.
Around
midnight, Zlatan walked towards us. I didn’t see him all night and all I knew
was that Helena was looking for him constantly, as she said it, she was worried
about him but when I asked why, she said that I should know, coldly. Of course,
I had no idea how I should know.
This
was a bit strange and I saw as if he was angry. Stephan walked over to him but
then Zlatan hit him hard. Stephan fell to the ground and I was just standing
there like a statue in fright. Everyone gathered around to see what was
happening.
“What’s
wrong, buddy?” Stephan stood up. Luckily, he was fine.
“You’re
the one asking? I’d rather you think and–”
“Zlatan
come on.” One of the other players stepped over to him. “It’s not worth it.”
“Leave
me alone,” he shouted, and Stephan just finished dusting himself off when he
shoved on him again. Of course, he didn’t let him win so a smaller fight broke
out. A few minutes later the security came and took them both out. I was feeling
utterly embarrassed. There were lots of photographers shooting outside, which I
was not fond of right now.
“Fuck
off already!” Zlatan shouted at them.
“Calm
down already.” I stood in front of him. “You’re drawing more attention to
yourself this way.”
“Why
did you shove me?” Stephan asked. Neither him nor me understood why he was
behaving this way.
“You
still don’t understand, do you? But I explained clearly–”
“Listen
here well, if you touch her even once–”
“Stop!”
I stood in-between them and hoped neither of them would hit me. “You can stop
now. What are you thinking? You are behaving like toddlers. You drank enough
and you’re cantankerous.”
“I’m
not drunk,” Zlatan said and sat down on the ground. I have never seen him in
this state.
“Can
you behave in each other’s presence for two minutes?” I asked, and both nodded.
“What
will you do?”
“I
will call Helena because she bounced. I won’t leave Zlatan here and you didn’t
drink that much.”
“So,
you’re not coming over?” Stephan stepped to me and held my hand.
“I
don’t know, it would be good, but I won’t leave Zlatan here. Give me a moment,
I’ll call Helena.”
She
said she won’t come because she is afraid to drive at night. She gave me
detailed descriptions of where I can find what papers in Zlatan’s car and to
take care on the road. When I told Stephan, he turned very angry.
“You
wanted this, didn’t you?” He looked at Zlatan angrily.
“I
case you care, I could value her more than you.” They were still shouting and
the crowd on the street was getting bigger. I said bye to Stephan and tried to
pull Zlatan to the car, but he was constantly cursing.
I
was vastly angry with him. Because he messed up my night, also because he got
drunk and got us and himself into an uncomfortable situation.
I
was a bit scared because I never sat in a this-expensive car, let alone drive
it. Zlatan was mumbling in Italian and other languages while falling asleep. On
the road I tried to figure out why this happened and why he turned this way
from one moment to the other. I realised he got angry because of someone but I
didn’t know because of whom.
We
were only a few blocks away when I noted a strange light on the road and
realised it was the police. Great, I
though and stopped on the side of the road.
“Are
we home yet?” Zlatan woke up next to me.
“No,
we are being checked. Behave, will you?” I asked him as I got the papers out. “Is
everything all right?” I asked the police officer who was a friendly looking
guy in his thirties.
“Miss,
you stepped well over the speed limit and ...,” he started but then looked in
the car and noticed Zlatan sitting next to me. “Excuse me but aren’t you ...”
“I
am. Is everything all right?” He asked, and I smiled. It’s unbelievable that he
would use his fame in this situation, but it comes handy now.
“Sure.
Sure. Could I maybe have an autograph?” He asked, extending a paper and pen
towards him. Zlatan quickly signed his name and we were on our way.
As
we arrived home, I parked in the garage, and I looked at the man next to me.
It’s almost unbelievable how different he is now than before. I wish I’d know why he got pissed, I
thought, but then he opened his brown eyes and looked at me. He was madly
handsome.
“Are
we home?” He asked.
“I
brought you to Helena because here you won’t be alone. Are you better?”
“You
don’t have to pretend to care.”
“Why
wouldn’t I care? I do care ... After all you are one of my best friends,” I
said and tried to get the flower out of my hair because I noticed it in the
mirror that it slipped out of place. I couldn’t do it so Zlatan helped me. He
took it out and gave it to me.
“Keep
it as something to remember by,” he said and gave me a kiss on my cheek and I
was surprised by my reaction. Heat ran through me and in that moment, I wanted
to kiss him, but he ruined the moment. “I figure you would’ve been happier to
be next to Stephan.”
“I
don’t think this concerns you,” I answered.
“Sure,
because I’m no other than your friend’s brother,” he said and headed to the
house.
“Tell
me, what the hell is your problem?” I shouted after him. “What did Stephan that
you had to do this to him?”
“You
really wanna know?”
“Yes.”
“You
wouldn’t understand.”
“Why
wouldn’t I?”
“Because
... You ... You don’t even notice what is in front of your eyes!”
“He
has someone new that I don’t know of?”
“No.”
“Then?
Does it bother you that he is with me? Or is it that you can’t stand me?” I
asked, and he turned to me at the door.
“No.
I never said that. I ... Do you feel this way?”
“I
have no idea what I feel, I just don’t want you to argue. It was hard to see
Stephan on the ground.”
“All
right, I’m done. I’m knackered.”
“There
it is again ... Why are you like this? You’re calm one moment then you turn mad
in the other. Why are you doing this?”
“Those
who don’t like my attitude can fuck off. I don’t give shit what you and the
others think about me,” he said and went into his room. I sat out on the
balcony, but my solitude didn’t last long because Helena came out with a cup of
tea in her hand.
“Are
you crying?”
“Yes,”
I sniffed, and I told her everything.
“You
can’t change him.”
“I
never wanted to change him, especially that I don’t have the right to.”
“You’re
right. Then he didn’t tell you what he wanted?”
“No.
Stephan called me. Helena, if you know something, please, tell me!”
“I
can’t. I promised him.”
“All
right. Then I’m going to sleep. Good night.”
“Wait.
Would you take a glass of water to him? Maybe it’ll do some good to him and
you’re not angry still?”
“Of
course, not. You’re my best friend.” I hugged her, and I meant it.
In
Zlatan’s room, only the table lamp was on. He was lying on the bed. As quiet as
I could, I put the glass down and turned the light off. On the way back
however, I kicked something that rolled over and hit the wall with a loud bang.
“Helena,
why can’t you walk a bit quieter?”
“Sorry,
it was me.” I turned around as he turned the light back on.
“What
are you doing in my room?”
“I
brought you a glass of water.”
“Oh,
thanks.” He drank it in one gulp and extended it to me.
“Do
you want some more?”
“No,
thanks ... Good night.”
“Can
I ask you something?”
“Lili,
I’m tired.” He looked at me tiredly and took his shirt off. I haven’t seen him
this way yet, so I felt embarrassed from the perfect look. And those tattoos.
They were all beautiful. “Yes?” His eyes were on me questioningly and I tried
to drag myself back to reality, concentrating on my original question.
“What
did you want to say today?”
“It’s
not important now ... And it’s bullshit, the whole thing.”
“I
think not. I’m sure it was important.” I stepped closer to his bed. “Please,
tell me.”
“Lili,
listen, I just wanted to tell you not to trust Stephan.”
“But
why? He loves me.”
“Is
that why he cheated on you?”
“He’s
sorry.”
“I
don’t understand why you are protecting him this much.”
“You
should too. He’s your best friend,” I argued.
“Not
for a while now. Fame got into his head and all that. We talk so little because
became egotistic.”
“You’re
one to talk.”
“Yes,
me. Sorry, but I know him a bit better than you do.”
“We
made up I think, and I trust him. I’m giving him a chance.”
“You
could give it to someone else too,” he said.
“Somebody
else?” I asked, surprised. “I don’t know anybody else whom I’d love as much as
I love him.”
“Never
mind and if you’d excuse me,” he shut me and the topic off, meaning he’d wish
if I’d go out already, so I pulled the door shut behind me on my way out and
went into my room. I wrote a text to Stephan then I fell asleep too.
